What to Wear

Our wedding blends two cultures, and we want everyone to feel comfortable and like themselves! Though there are no dress code requirements, you can generally think of the weekend this way:

  • Sangeet and Hindu Ceremony: Indian-forward
  • Christian Ceremony and Reception: Western-forward

Below is a guide to help you plan your looks, keeping Florida’s June warmth in mind.

Where to Shop for Indian Outfits

If you are near a major city, there are often in-person Indian stores you can shop at. For online:

Another great option is to borrow from friends or family who may have attended an Indian wedding before!

Sangeet

Vibrant and festive! This celebration is outdoors — expect warm weather, bright colors, and dancing.

Attire: If you would like to wear Western (typical American attire), the dress code is cocktail attire, but we encourage you to wear traditional Indian attire! For traditional Indian, there are many options for what to wear:

  • Color: We recommend colorful outfits! Black is not a traditional color for Indian wedding events.
  • Women: Lehengas and sarees are the most common options (please see photos below for examples). Salwar kameez, pantsuits, pants, kurtas or other creative options are also welcome. Indo-western attire references more modern styles that combine Indian style with American/European style, and there are many fun options in this category!
  • Men: Kurtas or sherwani suits are both excellent options. A Nehru or bandhgala jacket can add some flair to a suit you already have. An Indian-style vest can also be great. You can wear pants you already own or purchase Indian-style pants — the tighter ones are churidar and the looser ones are dhoti. See pictures below for options for both.

Baraat & Hindu Ceremony

Although the Baraat is outdoors, the ceremony is indoors, so you can comfortably wear more embellished or layered looks.

Attire: Either Indian traditional or Western cocktail. Again, Indian clothing is not mandatory but encouraged!

  • Color: Colorful clothing is recommended. All-black attire is not recommended as it is considered inauspicious. Please avoid wearing red/gold combinations as these are traditionally the bridal colors.
  • Women’s: A saree or a more conservative lehenga is the traditional wedding attire. A saree is a single piece of cloth that is pinned and folded into a variety of dress shapes, and is worn with a blouse and a petticoat. They are very difficult to tie on yourself without experience; if wearing a saree and you do not have experience, we recommend purchasing a pre-draped saree. You could also wear a more conservative lehenga, kurta, or salwar kameez. See photos below.
  • Men’s: Same style as Sangeet, slightly more formal. See photos below.

Christian Ceremony & Reception

The ceremony will be outdoors, followed by an indoor reception.

Attire: Western formal attire is recommended, but you are also welcome to wear your Indian formal outfit if you prefer.

  • Color: No specific recommendations other than avoiding bridal white :)
